This is a difficult but interesting exercise. Since the weather was rainy today I painted from my little porch and this was a view beneath the big old cedar trees by my patio. I used pastel on Uart paper. The main thing I learned is how distracting color can be. It was alot easier to model the stones in the wall in black and grey.


  1. I dunno, Pat; I think the stones in your final color rendering look pretty darn good.

  2. I agree. The last set of stones work well. In fact, I think that the value of the stones in the fourth panel is the best, and that makes more of an impact than the modelling.

  3. Pat, you are lucky to have trees outside your window to paint. I like the shadow under the trees in the final color section and the highlight on the grass in front gives more depth to the painting.
